Yopo seeds come from the Anadenanthera peregrina tree, a perennial tree native to South America and the Carribean. They have been used in ceremony for thousands of years by indigenous cultures in their native region to induce visionary states and entheogenic experiences.

The seeds contain a host of active compounds, including bufotenin, 5-MeO-DMT, and DMT. Traditionally, shamans would prepare a snuff mixture by heating the seeds over a fire to pop the shell, and then pulverize the tiny seed into a fine powder, adding ash and other plants to enhance the effects. The shaman would then blow the mixture up the users nose with a tool called a ‘tepi’. The experience is said to be extraordinarily intense and visual, and often includes a purge, similar to ayahuasca.
